Westmont 14.04.2012 *4.* by Tom Dixon

Seeing as I've had little to no time to sit and brew for vintage I just stuck with what was working for me.

1 Ancient Grudge

3 Ingot Chewer
4 Leyline of the Void

Round 1: Nick Detwiler - Aggro Shops?
Game 1: He drops in Porcelain Legionnaire and Precursor Golem. I don't find Ancient Grudge and lose shortly thereafter. He has some early spheres as well.
Game 2: Plays out similarly, not entirely certain on sequencing but I kept a sketchy opener and he punished me for it.

Rounds 2-5 are a bit of a blur at this point, as the event was a week ago. I know that I won out, and played several Blue/Fish variants. ID in R6.

Top 8: Keith on Jace/Bob control
Game 1: Fairly interactive game, he uses Lim-Dul's Vault and a Mystical Tutor and is too far behind in cards to get me despite a Snapcaster.
Game 2: I have Turn 1 Tinker with Double Force back up (yes 2 blue cards as well)

Top 4: Sean on EmraOath
Game 1: I Time Walk and Trygon then eat his Oath. After that he couldn't really get back in. Was glad to win G1 b/c I'm pretty cold to a resolved Oath. Luckily he had no Orchard.
Game 2: I have early action, but he has an early Oath + Orchard. I end up casting Sower on his Emrakul. He Oath's again, and needs to hit 1 of his other 2 Emrakuls, as his Blightsteel would put him on 0 permanents. He hits. I Demonic for Tinker and get my Blightsteel. He Oath's up Emrakul. I swing in and he has a 4/4 Jellyfish. He tanks for a few seconds and Oaths again. I disagree with this line of play, as he could have taken another hit from my Blightsteel and still lived, and then gotten a fresh Emrakul. If he hits one of the 2 Emrakul's this time, he loses. He hits the Blightsteel. Then he top decks Jace, and it was academic. I messed up my sacrifice, as I had another Sower in my deck but neglected to be under him in creatures. He didn't let me fix it when I asked, which is fine.
Game 3: He mulls to 4, I keep on 7. I have Ancestral off color mox 2 flusterstorm trygon and two lands. I drop the land and pass, casting Recall in his upkeep. He says ok. As I'm drawing my three he asks me to stop and says he has a Misstep. Seeing as we already t4 split and I'm pretty solid on NEV points, and he was on a mull to 4, I let him get his Misstep in despite being no sir'd the previous game on a takesy backsey. Of course he top decks Oath to go with his Mox and Orchard and he wins shortly thereafter. Grats to Sean.

When Egan and I arrived at FoW, we scout a little bit and see that there is a bunch of Oath and Hatebear type decks. I decide to flat cut Remora at that point and change up the SB a little bit.

Remora Gush - by Brian Smolin/Tom Dixon

4 Force of Will
2 Sower of Temptation
4 Gush
1 Fastbond
1 Brainstorm
1 Ancestral Recall
1 Trygon Predator
1 Tarmogoyf
1 Savaging Ooze
1 Green Sun’s Zenith
1 Time Walk
1 Demonic Tutor
1 Ancient Grudge
1 Tinker
2 Flusterstorm
2 Mental Misstep
1 Vampiric Tutor
1 Mystical Tutor
1 Blightsteel Colossus
1 Fire/Ice
1 Yawgmoth’s Will
1 Time Vault
1 Voltaic Key
1 Mox Sapphire
1 Mox Jet
1 Mox Ruby
1 Mox Emerald
1 Mox Pearl
1 Black Lotus
1 Sol Ring
3 Tropical Island
1 Volcanic Island
2 Underground Sea
2 Flooded Strand
2 Polluted Delta
2 Island
1 Scalding Tarn
1 Misty Rainforest
1 Library of Alexandria
2 Jace, the Mind Sculptor
1 Preordain
1 Mana Drain
1 Mindbreak Trap
1 Merchant Scroll

SB:

1 Goblin Bombardment
1 Volcanic Island
2 Nature's Claim
1 Trygon Predator
1 Ancient Grudge
2 Ravenous Trap
3 Ingot Chewer
4 Leyline of the Void

R1: Shops
Game 1: He has early Spheres, then hits Lodestone and Metamorph's it.
Game 2: I have a Library and ride the card advantage home.
Game 3: Ingot Chewers and Ancient Grudge's aren't fair against a mulligan to 5.

R2: Slaver - paired down
Game 1: He has a T1 Voltaic Key and Time Vault. I don't hit my one outer of Ancient Grudge.
Game 2: I Tinker BSC early with protection.
Game 3: Long game, he EoT's a Gifts Ungiven. His pile is Welder Key Vault and Tinker. I have Sower and Misstep, so I give him Welder and Tinker. He casts Yawg's Will, and tries to replay Voltaic Key. I Misstep, he plays Flusterstorm, I pay the 4, and he lets it resolve. He goes to bin the Key but I remind him it's RFG'd. He was feeling tired and wasn't in the game mentally so he concedes to go get a nap.

R3: Joe Brown - UWg control?
Game 1: Longer game, I eventually find a Library and refill through Gush, and lean on my cards to force through damage. Believe I Sower'd his Trinket Mage and attacked for 5 turns. My Sower was bounced at some point by a cool card I hadn't seen before.
Game 2: I mulligan a few times, Joe keeps on 7. He plays Island + Brainstorm, I Misstep. He has no second land drop before casting Preordain, and I put him on no other lands. I counter it with Flusterstorm. I was right, and we get into a top deck war. I hit a few Gush's so I get to make land drops and draw extra cards, and by the time Joe finds some lands he's had to pitch 3-4 cards and is a bit behind in tempo.

Round 4: Cat Stax Fever
Game 1: Ancient Grudge and Trygon Predator early got the job done.
Game 2: He left in Thorns, Ingot Chewer and Trygon Predator did well.

Round 5: Justin Kohler - Bomberman
ID + go get Pizza and Beer.

Round 6: Joe Pace - Gush
Game 1: He sticks Fastbond + Gush on me, then Yawg's Will. And Jace. Despite this the game goes 30 minutes as he couldn't find any aggressive action and I had a decent opener. I concede when I realize I can't win anymore and need time for Games 2 and 3.
Game 2: He missteps a Sol Ring, but has another for my Ancestral along with a Flusterstorm for my Flusterstorm. Back at parity, I rip Tarmogoyf and just beat in fast. Had 3 FoW and 5 mana so I ended up hardcasting them.
Game 3: I have an early BSC w/ FoW Flusterstorm and Mindbreak Trap backup
I played this round because I wanted to choose play or draw in top 8. I was also fairly certain Joe would still top 8 if he lost. Even if I had knocked him out, I still think this is the correct decision in a system that rewards the top seed. If the shoe was on the other foot, I'd have expected him to force me to win as well, because of the power of being on the play.

Top 8: Alex Bastecki on Noble Fish
Game 1: Alex has Gitaxian Probed me twice, and sees that I can assemble Vault Key fairly quickly and that I have Mana Drain. He decides to make me Drain a Trygon Predator so he can Force back, but either miscounts or blanks that I can still drop Demonic for Key next turn with mana to activate it.
Game 2: He has an early clock as per his decks normal route, and I just can't draw anything relevant in time. He also rips a Noble Heirarch to outclass my Trygon Predator.
Game 3: I have a Scavaging Ooze and a Tarmogoyf holding the ground, but he sticks a Trygon Predator. I lose to not finding an answer to a Flying creature, and to my inability to realize that Mystical ---> Yawgmowth's Will is a bad play into an on board Grafdigger's Cage. I probably should have taken Gush, as my outs were the one remaining Jace and 2 Sower's. Oh well.

Quote of the Day:
Chas: "Why do I bother, you'll just disagree with whatever anyone else says?"
Me: "I'd have to disagree with that."
